Backup rotation

Our current backup rotation methodology is similar to the old tape drive rotation system known as grandfather / father / son. Every night at around 10pm we sync the data on your server with two of our backup servers. After this is done, each backup server takes a snapshot of that data.

Those snapshots are then saved in one of three different cycles:

  1. Daily cycle: 6 of the daily snapshots are kept for a week before being deleted.
  2. Weekly Cycle: The 4 (sometimes 5) Saturday night daily snapshots are kept for a month.
  3. Monthly Cycle: The snapshot that occurs on the last day of the month is kept for a year.

These cycles happen on both assigned backup servers.
